Bank account frozen by cyber crime? Do this now.

Watch: the account-freeze episode

Why accounts get frozen after a cyber-crime complaint, and how to get yours unfrozen — EnfoldAI’s podcast episode with a cyber expert, in plain language.

  • What to ask your bank for first — transaction, amount, police station, Investigation Officer
  • What to do when the case was filed in another city
  • How to prove the money was received in good faith
  • Freeze vs hold vs lien — what the three words actually mean

With Sunil Sadasivan, cyber security expert — 1,000+ cyber fraud cases, 650+ conferences.

Step 1 of 4

What to collect from your bank

Visit your home branch in person. Ask for everything in writing — verbal answers change.

Collect these — in writing

Step 2 of 4

If the case is in another city

Freezes often come from a complaint filed far away — the money passed through your account's "layer". You do not have to travel immediately.

  • Contact the Investigation Officer by phone/email first — ask what they need from you.
  • Visit your nearest cyber cell with your evidence; they can coordinate with the case cell.
  • Keep a written record of every call and visit (date, name, what was said).

Step 3 of 4

Prove the money was received in good faith

The IO needs to see that you didn't knowingly receive fraud money. Evidence beats explanation.

Counts as evidence ✓

  • ✓ Invoice or order matching the amount received
  • ✓ Chat / email where the deal was agreed
  • ✓ Delivery proof, courier receipt, service record
  • ✓ Your bank statement showing normal history

Weak on its own ✗

  • ✗ Verbal agreements with no record
  • ✗ Screenshots edited after the fact
  • ✗ "I didn't know the sender" without context

Step 4 of 4

Write the unfreeze application

You will need a formal application to your bank manager and, in most cases, to the cyber cell. We generate both for you — free, in English or Hindi.
