How to report cyber fraud in India

Call 1930 first, then file the same complaint at cybercrime.gov.in. Below is what to have ready, what each step actually does, and which portal handles what.

What to have ready, and what happens

Step 1 of 4

Gather four things first

The call goes faster with these in front of you, and the portal complaint below asks for the same four.

Have these ready before you dial

Step 2 of 4

Call 1930

It is a national number and the call is free. You will be asked what happened, when, and for the transaction details above.

Step 3 of 4

File the same complaint online

Choose the financial-fraud category and attach what you have: screenshots, the SMS, the statement entry. The portal accepts a complaint whether or not you called first.

Step 4 of 4

Tell your bank, then keep following up

Give your bank the acknowledgement number. Banks act on a disputed transaction differently once a cyber-crime complaint exists against it.

Which official portal handles what

One complaint does not always belong in one place. These are the four government destinations a cyber-fraud report in India goes to, and what each one is for.

  • cybercrime.gov.in

National Cyber Crime Reporting Portal — I4C, Ministry of Home Affairs

File a written complaint about any cybercrime, financial fraud included. It is the same system a 1930 call feeds into, which is why the two belong together.

  • Sanchar Saathi

    Department of Telecommunications

Report a fraud call, SMS or WhatsApp message through Chakshu, and check which mobile connections are registered against your own ID.

  • CEIR

Central Equipment Identity Register — Sanchar Saathi

Block a lost or stolen phone across every network by its IMEI, and unblock it again if the phone comes back to you.

  • RBI Sachet

    Reserve Bank of India

Check whether a company collecting deposits is registered with a regulator, and complain about one that is not.

Questions people ask before they call

Is calling 1930 free?
Yes. It is a national number and the call is free. You will be asked what happened, when, and for the transaction details.
Do I have to call 1930 before filing at cybercrime.gov.in?
No — the portal accepts a complaint whether or not you called first. Doing both is still better: the call is what gets a transaction held quickly, and the portal complaint is the written record every later step refers to.
The amount is small. Is it still worth reporting?
Yes. Small transfers are how a chain of accounts is tested before a larger one, so a small report is not a wasted one.
I do not have all the details yet. Should I wait?
No. Reporting early with partial details is better than reporting late with complete ones.
