Money mule scams: the job was your bank account
A mule account is a bank account that receives money taken from fraud victims and passes it on. Anyone who pays you for the use of your account, UPI ID, ATM card, cheque book or SIM is recruiting one, and the account holder is the person a complaint reaches first: the account is frozen, and showing you were used falls to you. If yours has been used, stop moving money, tell your bank and report it yourself.

How it plays out
The ₹15,000-a-month "payment processing" job that needed only his account
The post in a Telegram jobs group is for a "payment processing executive" with an online gaming company: work from home, two hours a day, ₹15,000 a month plus 5% of what he processes. A second-year student applies. The interview is a WhatsApp call, and the only details asked for are his bank account number and UPI ID.
The work is simple. Money arrives in his account from people he does not know: ₹8,000, ₹23,500, ₹41,000. Within the hour he forwards each amount to a UPI ID the "team lead" sends, keeps his share and screenshots the transfer. In three weeks he moves a little under ₹3 lakh and keeps ₹4,800.
Then his UPI app stops sending. The bank says a debit freeze has been placed on the account on a cyber-crime complaint from another state, and the whole balance is held, including ₹14,000 of his own savings. The team lead has left the group, and the number no longer exists.
A week later a notice arrives from police in that state asking him to explain the transactions. Every person who paid into his account was a fraud victim somewhere else, and his account was the first one their money touched after it left them.
₹4,800 earned in commission, an account frozen with ₹14,000 of his own money in it, and a police notice from another state to answer.
A composite of money-mule recruitment as described in RBI, I4C and Indian police advisories and in reported freeze cases: the work-from-home "payment" job, the commission on forwarded money, and the out-of-state freeze. No real person, company or case is depicted; the amounts are illustrative.
Where it could have stopped
The job description. No real employer pays you to receive money into your own account and send it on; a business that takes payments takes them into its own account. The moment the work was "receive and forward", the account was the product, and saying no then would have cost him nothing.

The order is the explanation. Find where your own experience stops in this list. That is how far along the script has run.
- Money taken from a fraud victim cannot go straight to the people who took it, because the first account it lands in is the one a complaint freezes. Fraud networks therefore need a supply of ordinary bank accounts in other people's names, to receive the money and move it on within minutes. Those are mule accounts.
- The direct offer: "rent" your savings or current account for ₹10,000 to ₹25,000 a month, or sell it outright. You hand over the passbook, cheque book, ATM card, net-banking login and often the SIM the account is registered to, and you no longer see what goes through it.
- The job version: a "payment processing", "collection agent" or "finance executive" role found on Telegram, WhatsApp, Instagram or a job portal. You receive payments into your own account and forward them to a UPI ID or account the employer names, keeping a percentage. It is usually described as gaming, betting, forex or crypto settlement.
- The trade version: someone buys crypto from you on a P2P platform, or pays you for goods, with money taken from a fraud victim. You did nothing but sell, and the payment that arrived is the stolen money.
- The task-scam version: a "part-time job" that started with likes and reviews later asks you to receive money from other "members" and forward it, as a promotion.
- When a victim reports on 1930, the complaint follows the money through every account it passed. Each can be frozen, in full or for the disputed amount, and its holder contacted by police in the state where the complaint was made. The recruiter is never the account holder.
If it has already happened
In order, and the order matters. The first step is the one that can still get the money held, so it comes before everything else.
- Stop at once. Do not receive, withdraw or forward any more money, and take back or cancel any card, cheque book, SIM or login you gave anyone.
- Go to your bank, in person if you can, and tell it in writing that your account was used by someone who recruited you. Ask it to block the cards and net banking you handed over. A written report from you, before any complaint reaches the bank, is the record that you came forward.
- Report it yourself on 1930 or at cybercrime.gov.in: the recruiter's numbers and usernames, the group or post, every amount received and where you sent it. Keep the acknowledgement number.
- Keep everything: the job post, the chats, the screenshot of each transfer, your bank statement. They are what shows the account was used by someone else rather than run by you.
- If the account is already frozen, the freeze guide covers what to send the bank and the investigating officer, and the letter generator writes the application. If police send you a notice, answer it, and consider taking a lawyer with you.
- Do not send money back to anyone who asks for it unless your bank or the police tell you to. Requests to "reverse" a payment are often a second scam on the same account.
